The path from zero to airline captain is clear and achievable — here's the complete roadmap with honest timelines and salary expectations.

Timeline: 3–5 years from zero flight time to regional airline First Officer

With full-time training and consistent commitment. Part-time students take longer.

1

Private Pilot Certificate

The foundation of all aviation training. Minimum 40 hours total (35 Part 141), written test, and practical test. You'll learn basic flight maneuvers, navigation, weather evaluation, and emergency procedures.

Part 141: 35 hours min|Part 61: 40 hours min
2

Instrument Rating

Required for airline operations and essential for any professional flying in real weather conditions. Adds IFR flight capability, approach procedures, and more sophisticated weather decision making.

Requirements: 50 XC PIC hours, 40 instrument hours, written + practical test

3

Commercial Pilot Certificate

Allows you to fly for compensation. Required before you can instruct as a CFI or fly charter. Introduces higher precision standards and complex aircraft operations.

Requirements: 250 hours total (190 Part 141), written + practical test

4

CFI / CFII / MEI

Flight instructing is the primary path to building 1,500 hours. Active instructors at well-run schools build 800–1,200+ hours per year. The CFI adds CFII (instrument instruction) and MEI (multi-engine instruction) to increase earning potential and build more diverse experience.

Timeline to complete CFI: 1–3 months after commercial certificate

5

Build 1,500 Hours

Fly as a CFI, cargo pilot, banner tow, aerial survey, or any other flying job available to a commercial pilot. R-ATP with a qualifying aviation degree requires only 1,000 hours.

Most full-time instructors reach 1,500 hours in 1–2 years

6

ATP Written + CTP Course

The Airline Transport Pilot Certificate requires passing the ATP knowledge test. Before taking the ATP practical test, you must complete an FAA-approved Certification Training Program (CTP) — approximately 30 hours of ground and simulator training focused on transport category aircraft operations.

7

Apply to Regional Airlines

Most regional carriers (SkyWest, Endeavor, Envoy, Horizon, etc.) hire at 1,500 hours. New hire classes are frequent. Expect an initial interview, sim evaluation, and class training. Starting position: First Officer on Embraer 170/175 or CRJ 200/700/900.

Starting pay: $50,000–$80,000/year as regional FO

8

Build Seniority

Seniority is everything in airline careers. Upgrade to Captain at your regional (typically 2–5 years), then interview at major carriers (American, Delta, United, Southwest). Career progression is predictable once you're on the seniority list.

Career Salary Progression

Regional FO$50,000–$80,000/yr
Regional Captain$80,000–$120,000/yr
Major Airline FO$150,000–$250,000/yr
Major Airline Captain$250,000–$400,000+/yr
