What Is FAA Part 141 and Why Does It Matter?
The FAA regulates flight training under two primary frameworks: Part 61 and Part 141. The difference matters enormously for students who want to fly professionally, or simply reach their certificate in fewer total flight hours.
Part 141 requires flight schools to submit a detailed training course outline (TCO) to the FAA for approval. The FAA then inspects the school's facilities, aircraft, instructors, and record-keeping to ensure compliance. Once certified, a Part 141 school operates under direct FAA oversight with standardized stage checks and defined completion standards — meaning every student who graduates from our program has met a federally-reviewed benchmark, not just a self-assessed one.
Part 141 also allows reduced minimum flight hours: 35 hours for Private Pilot (vs. 40 under Part 61) and 190 hours for Commercial Certificate (vs. 250). For career-track students, this difference can save thousands of dollars and months of training time.
Part 141 vs. Part 61 — Which Is Right for You?
Choose Part 141 (Parrish Aviation) if you:
- Want to reach your certificate in fewer minimum hours
- Plan to fly professionally and want FAA-structured training on your resume
- Prefer a structured, stage-by-stage curriculum with defined checkpoints
- Want an academy with an independently verified standard
Part 61 offers more flexibility in scheduling and lesson sequencing, but lacks the FAA-reviewed curriculum standardization of Part 141.
Parrish Aviation Flight Academy operates exclusively under FAA Part 141 — which is why our students consistently outperform national averages on FAA checkrides.
