There's no shortage of pilot study materials — there's a shortage of good curation. This list is what I actually recommend to students at Parrish Aviation. I've cut anything I wouldn't put my name on. Everything below is either free from the FAA or the best-in-class paid option for what it does.

FAA Official Publications (Free)

Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge (PHAK)
Free PDF

The foundational reference for all private pilot knowledge. Free PDF on FAA.gov. Required reading — every knowledge test question traces back to this.

Visit
Airplane Flying Handbook (AFH)
Free PDF

Covers all flight maneuvers from first solo to commercial. FAA's official "how to fly" reference for practical skills.

Visit
Instrument Flying Handbook (IFH)
Free PDF

The authoritative IFR ground reference. Covers instrument systems, approach procedures, holding patterns, and IFR regulations.

Visit
Aviation Weather Services (AWS)
Free PDF

Covers METARs, TAFs, PIREPs, AIRMETs, SIGMETs, prog charts, and winds aloft. Critical for written test weather questions and real-world flying.

Visit
Airman Certification Standards (ACS)
Free PDF

Separate ACS documents exist for PPL, IFR, Commercial, and CFI. Download yours and treat each element as a checklist item to master before checkride.

Knowledge Test Prep (Written Exam)

Sheppard Air
Paid

The highest pass-rate written test prep for all FAA knowledge tests. Uses adaptive drilling based on the actual FAA question bank. Strongly recommended for IRA, CAX, and FII tests.

Visit
PrepWare (ASA)
Paid

ASA's test prep software covers PPL through ATP. Questions mirror the FAA bank. Good for students who prefer a textbook-aligned study approach.

Visit
FAA Practice Tests (free via FAA.gov)
Free

The FAA publishes its complete question bank for all knowledge tests at faa.gov. Free, authoritative, and includes the actual figures used on the test.

Apps for Student Pilots

ForeFlight
Paid

The industry-standard EFB (Electronic Flight Bag) for preflight planning, charts, weather, and in-flight navigation. Parrish Aviation students learn on ForeFlight from day one.

Visit
Garmin Pilot
Paid

Direct competitor to ForeFlight with tight integration with Garmin avionics. Excellent for students training in G1000-equipped aircraft.

Visit
CloudAhoy
Free / Paid

Post-flight debriefing tool. Visualizes your flight track overlaid on charts, analyzes maneuver performance, and helps CFIs give precise ground debriefs.

Visit
Aviation Weather Center (aviationweather.gov)

Recommended Study Plan: PPL Phase Breakdown

Phase 1Foundations (First 4 Weeks)
  • Download and skim the PHAK — focus on Chapters 1–8 (aerodynamics, aircraft systems, weather basics)
  • Start a ground school course (Sporty's or King) from day one of flight training
  • Download the ACS for your certificate and mark which knowledge areas apply
  • Begin logging 1–2 hours of ground study per 1 hour of flight training
Phase 2Core Knowledge (Weeks 5–10)
  • Complete your ground school course — take notes on regulations (14 CFR Parts 61, 91) and weather
  • Begin Sheppard Air or PrepWare drilling — aim for 85%+ on practice tests before sitting the real exam
  • Study the FAR/AIM: focus on Part 91 operating rules, airspace weather minimums, and ATC phraseology
  • Review AOPA Safety Institute weather and airspace courses (free)
Phase 3Checkride Prep (Final 4 Weeks)
  • Print the ACS and confirm you can define, explain, and demonstrate every knowledge element
  • Do a mock oral with your CFI using the ACS as the rubric
  • Review your logbook: verify all required aeronautical experience is logged and endorsed
  • Complete IACRA registration and get your CFI's pre-checkride endorsement

Study Resources FAQ

What is the best study resource for the private pilot written test?
For the Private Pilot written (now called the PAR knowledge test), Sheppard Air is widely considered the most efficient test-prep tool — it uses adaptive question drilling based on the actual FAA question bank. King Schools and Sporty's both offer more in-depth ground school courses if you want conceptual depth alongside test prep. The FAA Airplane Flying Handbook and Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge are free downloads on FAA.gov and are the primary references for all knowledge test questions.
Are FAA handbooks free?
Yes. All FAA handbooks — including the Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge (PHAK), Airplane Flying Handbook (AFH), Instrument Flying Handbook (IFH), and Aviation Weather Services — are free PDF downloads from FAA.gov. They are the official primary references and are updated periodically. Physical copies are available from ASA and Sporty's.
How long does it take to pass the private pilot written test?
Most students pass the private pilot knowledge test after 20–40 hours of focused ground study, though this varies significantly. Students who use a dedicated ground school course (Sporty's, King Schools) or Sheppard Air typically score higher. You need a 70% to pass — most Parrish Aviation students score in the 80–90% range with structured preparation.
Is Sheppard Air worth it for the instrument written test?
Yes — Sheppard Air is especially effective for the Instrument Rating knowledge test (IRA), which has a large question bank and many confusing weather and chart interpretation questions. The Sheppard Air adaptive drilling method produces very high pass rates. Many Part 141 schools — including Parrish Aviation — recommend it as a supplement to their curriculum-based ground school instruction.
What apps should every student pilot have?
Essential apps for student pilots: ForeFlight or Garmin Pilot for charts, weather, and flight planning; Sporty's Pilot Training for mobile ground school; FltPlan Go as a free alternative to ForeFlight; SkyVector for web-based VFR/IFR chart viewing; AOPA's Weather app for preflight; and Aviation Weather Center (aviationweather.gov) for official NWS aviation forecasts including METARs, TAFs, AIRMETs, and SIGMETs.
What is the ACS and why does it matter for studying?
The Airman Certification Standards (ACS) is the FAA document that defines exactly what a student must know, do, and demonstrate for each certificate or rating. Your DPE will test you directly against the ACS — not a generic syllabus. Every student should download the ACS for their certificate (PPL, IFR, CPL) from FAA.gov and treat it as the master study guide. Knowing the ACS elements turns vague 'study for your checkride' advice into a specific, completable checklist.

Train Where Ground School Is Built In

Parrish Aviation's Part 141 curriculum integrates structured ground school into every stage of training. Students don't have to figure out what to study — it's built into the syllabus.
